Slumdog millionaire, sucks..

Slum dog Millionaire: A movie which is Anti-Hindu and Anti-Ram

A magnificent Mumbai slum, two Muslim brothers, a Hindu mob killing innocent Muslim women, criminally amputated children singing Surdas’s songs, Hindu policemen torturing an innocent Muslim boy and a diabolic Hindu game-show host who hands his Muslim contestant to his Hindu police which hates the Amnesty international, and voila, you have all the ingredients for a ‘secular’ potboiler which is on the road to the Oscars! You might argue that it’s not realistic but only fantasy since there is greater probability of winning the jackpot on a lottery ticket without being abused by the police than winning the top prize on a quiz show with 15 unique questions.

But then you can be kidding with the graphic depiction of blood curdling anti Muslim riot in which a Hindu mob slits the children’s mother, the Indian policeman electrocuting the Muslim suspect or the gory scene of the amputation of the street children by the mafia who are then forced to sing Surdas’s bhajans. When was the last time in Indian History when an unprovoked Hindu population took to violence? For the record the Mumbai riots were incited by fanatical Muslim mobs in the face of the Baburi Masjid demolition. Moreover, it beats me how the consequent Mumbai bomb blasts triggered by local Muslim gangs be disassociated from the Mumbai riots? And the much maligned Bombay Police recently lost sixteen of its bravest men while defending the city’s freedom of speech and expression against Islamist zealots who wanted to replicate in India, a 7th century Arabia.

More disturbingly, you have the depiction of the blue bodied Rama whom Hindus consider as Maryada Puroshottam [the best among men] threatening to terminate the existence of the innocent Muslim children. Or, amputated children singing Surdas’s bhajan pining for a glimpse of Krishna? This insensitive jaundiced anti Hindu view is reminiscent of Indian leftist cinema where Hindu male characters are black and Muslims white! Remember, Mr and Mrs Iyer where a Hindu mob was searching for circumcised dicks and didn’t even spare a Jew in true Nazi fashion! Never mind that in world history, Hindus are the only people who don’t carry an atom of anti-Semitism, but the director’s flight of ‘secularist’ fancy won critical acclaim. Buddhadeb Bhattacharya in his film Uttara shows a band of Hindu goons burning a Christian church made in service of the lord’s lepers and raping an orphan girl in the process. Expectedly, this rather original gruesome way of story-telling won him the national awards! In the Tamil hit, Dasavathaaram, we find an anti-historical situation fantasizing Shaivite intolerance against Vaishnavs where Ramanujam's disciple is fighting Kulothunga Chola. Based on a solitary description of Chola antagonism in Ramanujam’s writings, we find the Chola fanatic stealing the idol of Vishnu from Srirangam, ironically the same temple complex which was plundered at least five times by Islamic armies. Previously, in the 70s when anti-Brahmana movement in Tamil Nadu was at its peak, we had Brahmana priests routinely paraded as rascals in Tamil movies

‘Islamic’ sensitivities have extracted book bans from both British and Congress governments. Girja Kumar in his “Book on Trial” has reproduced dozens of cases where Hindu books critical of Islam or the Prophet were banned, and the authors faced arrest or were killed. Salman Rushdie’s flight and Taslima Nasrin’s plight is well known. Lajja almost faced a ban because she had exposed the genocide against Hindus in Bangladesh. Movies on the state of Kashmiri pundits, victims of Islamic genocide against Hindus of Bangladeshis, the Hindu victims of the North East against Christian separatism and also the historical crimes by the armies of Islam and inquisitory Christianity are taboo in a ‘secular country’ They cannot see the light of the day because they are inimical to communal harmony and hurt minority sentiments.

This ostentatious display of anti Hindu sentiment is of course lost on the jingoists or the confused ABCDs who go gaga over such pernicious cinema. Sincere critics questioning the dumb plot where a slum boy grows up into a sophisticated leftist JNU product with a flawless English accent are censured by appealing to the authority of the Golden globe awards. They keenly forget the film was precisely designed for that, appeal to the racial sensitivities of those who really matter!

  1. This is a really brilliant analysis of this atrocious film. Ironically, this film was released a week before Muslims terrorized Mumbai & slaughtered Hindus, Christians & Jews. Not one Hindu group in the West has registered any complaint whatsoever about this destructive film. Thank you for doing this.

  3. Lovely analysis, the main tv channels are going absolutely gaga over this movie that they can accept any dirt. Indians most of them lack self respect and its so evident.

  4. To be honest....Slumdog Millionaire Sucks...yep it sucks big time....only darker side of mumbai is shown and in fact muslim women and men get too much freedom in India that is even not possible in pakistan as well as middle-east countries. The undying and lively spirit of Mumbai should also been shown. And yes this is recorded:It is only city in the world that after going through series of blasts since 1991 (of course conducted by muslim terrorists) still has peaceful ambience (because Hindus & Christains of Mumbai never strongly reacted). This element of tolerance was absent in the movie which makes it void in loss of facts.

  5. The thing is most western movie goers don't know who is Muslim or who is Hindu in the film.

some other thoughts on the film:

While it is nice to see a movie based in India that doesn’t make it a great film.

The film is just a slightly above mediocre Hollywood movie that has Indian actors instead of Americans.

The film is ultra predictable, cheesy, and the characters are shallow.

Why does he fall in love with her? There is no real chemistry between the characters. The audience is given no reason to believe there is any connection there. Why does he like her? She is hot? That is it.

The good looking people get together and get rich, the bad and not as pretty people lose, die, get shot, The End. How many films are like this? Like a million…

This is style (cute kids, great scenery in the movie) over substance.

  6. Gururaj, When I saw this movie it did not strike me as being Anti- Hindu. I saw a story of Jamal Malik being told, not Hindu bashing. All the people who comment on this blog being excellent are the reason why India is in a sorry state wrt religious Intolerance.

  7. I am not clear why India is intolerant of other religions, as opined by (not so) "Hindu" man. Where else in the world would you have a democracy where the ruling party's chielf is a foreign born national (Italian-born Cathlic Sonia Gandhi) or the P.M. a member of a proud minority (the Sikh P.M. of India, Mr. Manmohan Singh)? Would the UK elect a Muslim P.M? Or the U.S. a Buddhist President? The answer is a categirical No. But India is "intolerant!"

The poster says SLUMDOG is not Hindu-bashing, but is merely the story of one Jamal. Why, then, does the film name its hero as Jamal, a Muslim name, when the book that this film is inspired by, has the protgonist's name a combination of Hindu-Christian names? Why is there no depiction of Muslim aggression on Hindus, when the film depicts Hindus aggression on Muslims? Is there a shot of Prophet Mohammed watching (sanctioning) Muslim violence? No. But there is a shot of Lord Rama sanctioning Hindu "barbarity."

And yet "Hindu"man would insist SLUMDOG is merely the innocent, apolitical tale of an individual named Jamal--and those who offer their "brilliant" analysis about the film's overt Hindu-bashing are examples of how rampant religious intolerance is, in India!

I guess "Hindu"man's definition of religious tolerance in India is a situation in which Hindus meekly and silently accept all indignities, insults and offenses to their faith.

  8. arpuda arogiyam,

Catholics do not worship idols of Mary and Christ. I can say this as a practicing Catholic. There are statues of both figures in our churches, however we do not worship the statues. We don't even worship Mary... or saints... or whatever.

I don't see anything wrong with other religions who do this. But please get your facts straight before drawing comparisons. It would make you seem a LOT more credible in your arguments :)

  9. I just finished watching the first 30 minutes of this appaling "movie" before turning away in disgust. (thank goodness I didn't pay a penny to see it...)

I put the word movie in quotes because this is absolutely not an original artistic work worth of the name Cinema, but a sick and twisted collection of harmful stereotypes, which seems patched together from other movies that actually had at least some artistic merit (think "Pixote" and "City of God").

Mind you, I'm neither Indian or Hindu (a Brazilian in NY), but still feel personally insulted by this piece of garbage. It's just sick...

The only thing I can say is that this is obviously the product of someone's sick imagination.

    ugh... disgusting...

  10. please dont say muslim... say sunni instead. of course all sunnis arent bad but i doubt any other muslim group would even think of such actions. All the other groups are being terrorized by the sunnis that is. and btw, wickedly, descriptive, HORRIBLE, INSOLENT review.

  11. Nice analysis by Gururaj...... and it is one hundred percent true....Arpuda, Vilasini Reddy and Andre, Nice work too, keep it up.......Finally for Susan (and some others who feel very comfortable in praising Slum dog, I think you people do not understand English much, that's why you are unable to understand the movie and I assume since someone you know said good, your are also repeating the same words like a sheep in the flock....COME ON wake up, the movie is a barbarous attempt to show India and Hindu religion bad to the world. Ask your selves why the director changed the boy's name from a secular one to a Muslim one, I really do not remember when a Hindu mob attacked Muslim slums in recent Mumbai history and what is the boy in LORD RAMA getup doing there (A real Indian, irrespective of his/her religion, gets his nerves burned with anger towards movie makers at this point in the movie, when did Bacchan or Sharukh Khan insulted a person in KBC on the basis of his society status and believe me a police officer interrogating a boy for his entry into final stage of a game show, it will never happen in democratic India (in USA or UK it is definitely possible). And the questions and slum dog answers in the game show...ohhhhhh they are real jokes in the movie (WHO SAID THERE IS NO COMEDY???)... A slum dog residing in India knows about Benjamin Franklin but does not know about a simple saying beneath four lions statue and Gandhi... (and people say HOLLYWOOD movies are known for their feel of REALITY!!!!!!!). Ohhhhhh did I mentioned about THREE MUSKETEERS..... our charming heroin knows answer for it....Bingo SLUM DOG BAN GAYE MILLIONAIRE. By the way, at last, you people know who is the real slum dog....It is DAVID BOYLE...You may ask why???? At first slum dog opened at top 10 position in USA and within one week it disappeared. But later the great OSCAR nominations were announced and slumdog got back into top 5 and DAVID BOYLE SLUM DOG became millionaire. HAHAHA... Once again I appreciate GURURAJ efforts and his opinions are very good and damn true.
